The second day started with a trip to Warcop for the Eden Valley Railway. DEMU 205009 was used to provide an ordinary run in the first instance from the station out to the current limit of operations at Sandford, a journey of 2m 12ch in each direction. This was further than most participants had realised would be happening, operations having been extended from MP 6½ to MP 8 from April 13th this year after that section had been TCP in December 2013 by a landslip at Wild Boar Cutting, which was passed cautiously. Beautiful sunshine provided the ideal opportunity for photographs. With a change of traction to 2 x MLV vehicles and EMU 2315 as coaching stock we then traversed unusual lines by taking in the South Siding Double Slip, the South Siding single line, and continued literally to the buffer stops. This was confirmed as a first for preservation passenger operations. Once operations ceased participants were able to visit the excellent café, book shop and view other items of rolling stock at this very friendly railway.
Participants then relocated to Kirkby Stephen East, the home of the Stainmore Railway. Peckett 2084 top n' tailed with FH3958 on coaching stock to journey 15ch from the station being the normal route of passenger operations. The run was repeated to allow the opportunity to photograph the train or ride again. Moving to brake van riding, FH3958 top n' tailed with YE2952 to complete a return trip of 26ch from the station to Footbridge 148 before reversing and traversing the loading siding, and then back to the station. The manoeuvre was repeated until all passengers had ridden. Again there was ample time to explore the site, visit the café and view other rolling stock.
Many then participated in the PLEG visit at the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway which combined track and traction, before completing their fun filled day at the 7¼” gauge Millerbeck Light Railway (Newby Bridge). An extremely comprehensive visit was delivered covering all available lines with multiple types of traction including elements of hand propelling. All attendees were treated to unlimited tea or coffee with lovely homemade cakes. The hardest part of the visit was keeping track of your track coverage on such a complex layout! Rides continued late into the evening amidst a wonderful setting, making a very relaxing and sociable end to another great day.
