Bere Ferrers - Pick a Ruston event

On Saturday 22nd June, an unusual event was held at Bere Ferrers, in the old goods yard adjacent to the branch line station. 23 participants enjoyed not only the riding aspects but a delicious four course cream tea which did nothing for waistlines but plenty for tastebuds! Service was provided in different combinations by all three Hunslet diesel locomotives on site, being a surprise for participants as it had been agreed only one locomotive would operate. All participants were also given the opportunity to cab ride and drive, under supervision, as part of their fare. The mileage was estimated by member Jim Sellens at a mere 9 chains from the turntable to the end of the line, but unlimited rides were available. The planned use of the hand pump trolley had to be withdrawn as it was rather wet underfoot. Huge thanks are due to Chris and his team who made our visit and social evening very interesting indeed – the General Secretary was most pleased as he achieved the fastest time for a 360 degree rotation of the platform mounted hand crane! Thanks as always are recorded for the Society members and contributors who provided invaluable information to the participants to aid the enjoyment of their visit.
